What Is LOE (Lease Operating Expense)?

Lease Operating Expense (LOE) is the total recurring cost of operating and maintaining an oil or gas well after it has been drilled and completed. LOE includes direct lifting costs (artificial lift power, chemical treatments, well servicing), field labor, surface equipment maintenance, produced water disposal fees, ad valorem and severance taxes, insurance, and overhead allocated to the lease. LOE is typically expressed in dollars per barrel of oil equivalent ($/BOE) and is one of the primary metrics used to evaluate well and field economics.

    What's Included in LOE?

    • Direct lifting costs: Electricity for pumps, chemical treatments (scale, corrosion, paraffin inhibitors), well servicing
    • Labor: Pumpers, field operators, lease maintenance personnel
    • Water disposal: Costs for trucking or piping produced water to SWD facilities
    • Surface equipment: Maintenance of tanks, separators, treaters, flowlines
    • Workovers and repairs: Downhole equipment repairs and replacements
    • Taxes: Ad valorem (property) taxes and production/severance taxes
    • Transportation: Costs to move produced oil and gas from the lease to a sales point

    Why LOE Matters

LOE directly determines well profitability. A well producing 20 BOPD at $70/bbl generates $1,400/day in revenue. If LOE is $30/BOE, that's $600/day in operating costs — leaving $800/day before royalties and overhead. If LOE creeps to $50/BOE, the well is barely economic. Managing and reducing LOE is critical for operators, especially in low-price environments.

    How AI Helps Optimize LOE

AI can identify LOE reduction opportunities by analyzing cost patterns across an operator's well portfolio — flagging wells with anomalous power consumption, excessive chemical costs, or frequent workovers. Collide's platform consolidates operational and financial data to give operators well-level LOE visibility.
